Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony Number Five :: essays research papers

Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony Number Five Ralph Vaughan Williams, descended from the famous Wedgwood and Darwin families, was born at Down Ampney, Gloucestershire in 1872. In 1890 he entered the Royal College of Music, and in 1892 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge. One of the greatest of the British composers, a prolific writer of music, folksong collector, and champion of British cultural heritage, he died aged 85 in 1958. His ashes are interred in Westminster Abbey alongside the nation's greatest artists and poets. Symphony No. 5 in D Introduction The symphony contains a lot of material from RVW's then unfinished opera, The Pilgrim's Progress. When he began the Fifth Symphony, RVW thought he may never finish the opera, and didn't want to waste any good ideas. The symphony does not have a programme, it is absolute music. It is in four movements: a "Preludio" first movement, a Scherzo, a "Romanza" slow movement, and a "Passacaglia" finale. First Movement : Preludio From the very beginning, RVW puts the key signature of this movement into doubt. The movement opens with a horn call in D, set against a firm base (or bass?) of octave C's. Could it be that in the great traditions of British musical 'amateurism', RVW got his transposition wrong? Or is this a deliberate feature of the music, intended to blur the tonality? Musicologists prefer the latter explanation. This is by no means an unusual feature of his music, when he was asked what the 4th symphony was about, RVW replied "It is about F-minor", alluding to his sometimes hazy tonalities, often augmented by his use of modal, mainly pentatonic melodies, which, with no leading note, often help to 'fudge' the tonality. Apart from the horn call, the brass is seldom used, and the texture is light and airy. The first violins then enter, high on the E string, doubled at the octave below by the seconds in an introduction, before their main theme at (1), doubled by flutes. The triplets add rhythmic variety, as well as providing a distinctly 'folkie' feel. During the course of the movement, the distinctive dotted rhythm of the horns hardly ever leaves us. There are some rather abrupt key changes. i.e. Eb to E at (5). We are taken into the Allegro by a sudden change in mood. The music darkens with a slightly sinister version of the horn call in the bassoons. We then enter the Allegro, with a scurrying in the strings, whilst the wind begins a downward progression of notes, which builds to a climax, with strings in semiquavers, until we reach the original

(â€Å"Worldnews. com†. 2011) For instance, there has an article posted on hm. com about Royal Government of Cambodia is considering amendment to article 67 and 73 of Cambodia enactment. This affects H;M as it injures their short-term contracts. If there are changes in laws, H;M has to change the purposes or operations to fit the requirements. Economic: economic growth; unemployment; interest and exchange rate; global economic trends (David Jobber, 2007, p. 43) H;M Company has over 87,000 employees in about 41 countries for now, they target growth around 10-15 percent new stores per year. In the operation of making clothes some of certain colors and designs need some unusual or more high-class machine to finish therefore H;M can keep the product in a quality. (â€Å"Adpunch. org†, 2010) The evolution of media technology will help H;M become popular through the Internet and advertise. H;M Company has to follow roles that can protect the environment. (â€Å"H;M offers fashion and quality at the best price†, 2011) P. 4 D002 T2242531 Customer analysisH ; M is â€Å"fast, aggressive, accurate† as the main feature of the rapid rise of fast fashion, driven by global fashion trends. (â€Å"H;M offers fashion and quality at the best price†, 2011) They also describe its mission as â€Å"Fashion and quality at the best price. † H;M is used in â€Å"small, a variety† of product strategy, it breaks the traditional limit apparel industry, in the same season will continue to introduce new models for consumers to choose. H;M`s business scope has men`s, women`s, women`s underwear, children`s clothing and accessories.General characteristics of H;M`s clothes are rich in color choice, style wild simple, dynamic and fashionable, casual, comfortable, affordable, not expensive, therefore the products of H;M are suitable for t he students, young office ladies, travellers. (â€Å"Just-style†, 2011) They have set the target consumers group of young people, who aged around 15-30, this type of fashion buyer groups with a high degree of sensitivity and have some spending power, but do not have the ability to possess the regular consumption of high-class brand`s product. (â€Å"Inspiring customer experience†, 2010)For instance, there is a young woman, who may just graduated or still studying in university or high school. She cannot afford to buy high-class brand clothes, she might consider to buy H;M clothes, because H;M`s clothes are design by large number of famous designers and celebrities. This shows H;M attracts plenty of young girls who have high degree of sensitivity. P. 5 D002 T2242531 Market description Sweden`s H;M Company, full name Hennes ; Mamitz, by founder Erling Persson founded in Sweden in 1947, the clothing retail chain.Currently in Europe and North America 29 countries and regi ons have their retail stores. Annual sales of goods more than 5. 5 million, has become one of the Europe`s largest clothing retail chain. The major rival of H;M is ZARA. Spanish fashion brand ZARA is well known in Spain ranked first, third softball apparel retailer Inditex company`s brand, the company has nearly 2,000 stores worldwide, ZARA is one of nine brands if Inditex, the most famous flagship brand, is considered to be Europe`s most research value of the brand. Tony Hines and Margaret Bruce (2007)The success of both companies benefited from the use of unique marketing strategy. Two companies have taken on in the price of low-coast strategy. ZARA is target the consumer group has high income and high-educated young people, mainly 25-35 year-old customer layers, H;M has set the target consumer group of young people 15-30 years old. Two companies frequently updated fashion cheap products just to meet the needs of this population. H;M take the price lower than ZARA layer of strateg y. According to statistics, H;M fashion price is lower than ZARA about 30% to 50%.Tim Jackson and David Shaw (2009) In price discounts, H;M is using the less discount strategy, because all products of H;M are â€Å"small amount and variety†, for example, consumers who buy the first time, there is a risk of no longer buy, therefore they are often unable to wait until the end of the quarter or the end of the year discount. It is kind of psychological advantage of consumers. Almost all of the goods sold in a short time, leave only a small amount of undesired products at discount end of the quarter or the end of the year.H;M estimated 2005 pre-tax profit of 1. 4 billion, on sales of 6. 3 billion. (David Jobber, 2007,p. 35) P. 6 D002 T2242531 SWOT analysis SWOT means strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. (David Jobber, 2007,p. 46) Strengths The main reason why H;M has become popular is low price. H;M provides good quality clothing, department store price that is extre mely unusual in many of today’s retailers.Another advantage of the H;M is the product delivery time, only less than 13 weeks, a project from the design to retail store, that is quite impressive for a international, low price retailer. (â€Å"Jing`s Marketing Blog†, 2011) In addition, they use guest designer bands and shop to keep the line fresh and special, at an affordable price, ability to reach a large target market to satisfy different fashion tastes, having a well-known brand name. Weaknesses Customers may think clothes to be low quality because of the low price, that is a type of psychological of some customers and the quality of service also is a problem for H;M.A large retail store, if there are only a few numbers of staff, they are unable to take care of all the customers. On the other hand, because the company buys a large number of means, there is no one can promise all the items will be sold out. That means their low price may have to be lower and lower to attract consumers to buy their products or means that H;M Company may have to pay additional storage space for these unsold items. (â€Å"H;M-Facebook†, 2011) Opportunities There will be a good opportunity launch some clothes are for elderly people. They can develop a new line for elderly people.I think it would be a good opportunity for H;M, because elderly people also want to wear fashion clothes with a nice, low price, I also think this opportunity can let H;M become more popular, also make more people aware of this brand H;M. Threat There is more and more new retailers appear in the market, such as ZARA, Forever 21, River island. These retailers undoubtedly formed a kind of competition, each firm also has their own marketing program, own characteristics, and the main threat is they are also using the same marketing strategy as H;M â€Å"good quality at a low price†.H;M has to create some new strategy to strong stay competitive. Tim Jackson and David Shaw (2009) P. 7 D002 T2242531 Conclusion and Recommendation The biggest threat for H;M is other retailers from other countries, they are also have plenty of capital and technology to against H;M, therefore H;M should have some innovation actions and strategies to increase the competitive in the fashion market to maintain and attract more customers.First, rely on H;M`s standardized management capabilities to continuously improve their management level and the quality of products. Second, full play to their favorable factors and development, and vigorously promote the clothing company with foreign strategic cooperation. Third, appropriate under the circumstances of the adjustment value, adjusted by way of sale. References David Jobber (2007) Principles and Practice of marketing 5th Edition Fast fashion. (2011). Bradbury’s the Sound of Thunder and Skurzynski’s Nethergrave

English Critical Essay Bradbury’s  The Sound of Thunder  and Skurzynski’s  Nethergrave  are both intriguing science fiction stories. Both stories are about technology changing the life of an individual. In the the story Nethergrave, a boy name Jeremy chooses a virtual world over the real world where he feels embarrassed, uncomfortable, and alone. In the story A Sound of Thunder, the main character, Eckels, faces severe consequences due to a mistake that he makes when going back in time. Nevertheless, both characters’ personality is pretty similar in some ways both being somewhat cowardly. Both are about the effect technology can have on the world. I honestly felt that Bradbury’s story was more interesting than Skurzynski’s story. I found that the slightest thing in the past may change the future massively. In the story, Eckels uses a new invention, a time machine. Then he decided to go back to the time when dinosaurs were alive. While he was there, that triggered terrible consequences. Eckels’ death in the end wasn’t very surprising. The mistake seemed very small at the time, but had a massive effect on the outcome of the present-day world.Although Skurzynski’s story was very relatable towards others, I still think Bradbury’s story was better. Nethergrave  was about a boy named Jeremy, making a decision of staying in a world he wasn’t happy in or to leave and enter a whole new world in which he was promised never to be alone or hurt. The idea of a boy feeling awkward in the real world, then looking into what appears to be a better world just isn’t what I find interesting. I have sometimes felt awkward and embarrassed in this world, though I do not think that I would want to enter a virtual world.Throughout the story, I never felt as though I liked or related to Jeremy’s character. Both of the stories show how technology can change a person’s life for better or fo r worse. Technology can be very useful but it can also cause destruction. In science fiction plots, often results in a negative effect. Technology can be both destructive and useful, but in these stories, they both have negative outcomes. As in Skurzynski’s story, Jeremy was introduced to a new virtual world, which resulted in Jeremy ending his life on earth. In Bradbury’s story, the time machine ended up changing the present world.

Examine the arguments of those who object to the Porters monologue in Macbeth and to the succeeding dialogue between and Macduff.

Examine the arguments of those who object to the Porters monologue in Macbeth and to the succeeding dialogue between and Macduff. In every great piece of literary work, two aspects can be found. One deals with different values and incidents from the contemporary society while the other reflects eternal and universal values in them. But the more interestingfact is that these two aspects can lie hidden in a single piece of work.Shakespearean dramas are also no exception. Besides, these dramas, in them, have a few scenes that appear to provoke laughter but underneath lie a deep message from the dramatist which reveals the spirit of the drama, or at least, the spirit of the scene concerned. So it is not unnatural that some of the critics should trace only one aspect while the other remains rather obscure. And precisely this is why there are so many contradictory criticisms about some such scenes of this great Elizabethan dramatist. One such controversial scene is the so-called Porter scene in Macbeth-(Act II; Scene III).The sleepwalking Lady MacbethThere are many critics who are of the opinion that the Porter scene, in its style and the coarseness, is un-Shakespearean. This group ofcritics is headed by Coleridge who says , "This low soliloquy of Porter and his few speeches afterwards I believe to have been written for the mob by some other hand, perhaps with Shakespeare's consent: and that finding it he with the remaining ink of a pen otherwise employed just interpolated the words' I'll devil porter it no further. I had thought to have in some of all professions, that go the primrose way to the everlasting bonfire' "Anyway, Coleridge's criticism has not been generally accepted. The Clarendon editors considered this scene to have been interpolated by Middleton and they think it to be strangely out of place amid the tragic horrors which surround it.Both of these criticisms, anyway can be...

Essay About Your Goals

Essay About Your Goals Goals, or goal making, can be applied to so many aspects of life: success, health, productivity, projects, and relationships – the list is endless. People set goals to meet an objective, either on a short- or long-term basis. Some goals, like writing a book and publishing it, may take a number of years to accomplish. What Is a Personal Essay A personal essay is a kind of narrative essay where the author tells about a certain life incident or something that has had a significant impact on him or her. It may also speak of a lesson learned, or simply express a point of view on some issue, which was of vital importance to the author. The personal essay appears to be one of the richest and most vibrant of all literary forms. The personal essay is also one of the most popular forms of creative nonfiction. ESSAY FORMAT If you are looking for personal essay examples here is a great one below. Read and enjoy! â€Å"Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible†   Tony Robbins Goals, or goal making, can be applied to so many aspects of life: success, health, productivity, projects, and relationships – the list is endless. People set goals to meet an objective, either on a short- or long-term basis. Some goals, like writing a book and publishing it, may take a number of years to accomplish. While some goals are set for a day, a week, a month – but all goals are different and require different lengths of time to accomplish. They serve to motivate, to remind and to monitor, for people who want to improve themselves, to become successful or try something new. As a college sophomore, at 20 years old, I am in the beginning to see the benefits of setting goals. One of my goals I set in high school was getting into Columbia University in New York City, and I hit that goal. Now I’m there studying business and marketing, where I am still making and hitting my goals. Two I’ve set myself is graduating in two years with a degree and graduating with a grade point average (or GPA) of 3.5. A college degree, especially one from an Ivy League school, will open many doors for my future career – and graduating with a high GPA will almost ensure me of at least tons of interviews once I graduate. However, I also have a goal of getting an internship, to have practical, real-world experience in the field of business and marketing. This I plan to get before I graduate so that I can start applying for jobs the moment I get my degree, or even before I get my degree. (Another goal is finding a job that really challenges me, a job I love and which does not feel like work at all.) Others goal I have to pertain to my personal and family life. Once I have landed a good, fun, high-paying job, I hope to enter the dating scene: to find someone to love and spend my life with. That’s what everyone wants and what many people work hard for. My goal is to meet the right girl who understands me, challenges me and appreciates me for who I am, a person who will complete me and be there for me when times are bad, as well as when they are good. Finding and keeping the right person is all that truly matters in this life – and that is what I want and will get. Also, my goal is to start a wonderful, loving family that will come to take care of me when I’m old, weak or weary. Lastly, another goal I have is having financial success, to be able to live a long, healthy life. It’s something I never saw in parents, as both are working-class people who have struggled with debt and other financial hardships. Even to this day, they sometimes work paycheck-to-paycheck and stress about paying bills, struggling and never going on vacation. I don’t want that life. I want, I need, I deserve, financial freedom – the freedom to live a life free of the fear of going broke, homeless, becoming poor – and a life completely free of the worry of having enough money. No, money and a good career are not everything. Just half. You also need people in your life to love, who love you back, and who provide meaning to life. This cannot happen without setting and hitting goals, then setting more and hitting more. It’s a life-long practice used many successful people all across the board. And it’s something everyone could benefit from at some point in his or her life, in any and all aspects of it. It works, and it’s been proven to help people become a better version of their self. Small and Medium Enterprises in the USA Case Study

Small and Medium Enterprises in the USA - Case Study Example In this chapter, all the problems and issues that are associated with a small scale business have been discussed, including their aims and objectives and how these businesses function on such a small scale. Their main sources of finance, as well as profit capabilities, have been discussed, as well as the ways by which these businesses tend to make money.  ASME functions on a very small level and the employees that are usually working in an SME are quite illiterate or do not have the desired level of qualification that is needed. Commonly, a small scale business can be functional in several ways. For instance, a small handicraft business would be regarded as an SME. This is because i) the number of profits generated by a business is quite low and not consistent and ii) the number of employees that are working in an SME is lower than 50, which is the actual limitation set by the European Commission. A ‘medium’ sized business is one which functions on a slightly larger sc ale as compared to a small business, and as described by the EU Commission, the number of employees in a medium scale business is more than 50 but less than 250. There are several issues that arose while this research was undertaken. Due to the lack of records that are unavailable, most of the research had to be undertaken on a purely qualitative level and very little quantitative data was found with which a proper extract an idea could be generated about small business. Furthermore, the types of businesses that are functioning on a small scale level are quite diverse. For instance, an online business is a small scale business, because the profits generated online are usually not as high as compared to a large scale business, and the numbers of employees in such a business are usually quite low. On the other hand, an agricultural business is also a small scale business, because the number of employees that are hired for agricultural purposes is not that high, and therefore their ill iteracy causes a huge hindrance in proper communication (Goodman, 2003).  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another research issue that arose was the fact that a small business keeps very little records of their past dealings because of the lack of space or storage data. Therefore, most of the claims made by small businesses could not be verified and only after extensive research could it be found whether the word of a small scale business entrepreneur was true or not. This caused a problem because all data that had to be included in the research needed to be verified and validated, and it took a lot of effort and intellect in order to come up with the right results.

What is Text Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

What is Text Analysis - Essay Example This piece of text is a narrative of a peaceful afternoon spent at the beach. We can classify it as a narrative because it meets the following criteria: â€Å"the main purpose of a narrative text is to tell a story† (Moss, 2004). Therefore, we can comfortably call this piece a narration (PBWorks, 2007). The important question that I seek to answer in this analysis of the interplay between form and content is how well the narrative techniques employed by the writer complement the ideas conveyed. In my opinion, the relationship between form and content in this piece is strong which makes it aesthetically pleasing and easy to read (Pasold, 2008). The text begins with details about the surroundings: â€Å"The sun’s rays sparkled on the water and a cool breeze swept across my body†; these details and how they are expressed by a choice of simple yet vivid words infuse a mellow mood to the whole setting and this mood can be seen to dominate the entire string of details that follows. The entire text is dedicated to an account of the author’s activities while he was relaxing at the beach (probably spending some time alone while his fellows were inside the hotel) and indulging himself in the pleasures of good food. His statement that â€Å"this proved to be the most magical feast I had ever tucked into† wholly complements the mood that he created with the graphic details of his serene surroundings at the beginning of the paragraph. The paragraph ends on a sullen note which is seen as contrasting from the overall mood of the text. It expresses the disappointment of the narrator at not being able to enjoy such solitude for long because the time for tea with fellow achievers was  approaching. His statement with which he ends this account- ‘life is hard’ – diffuses a feeling of nostalgia and grimness.
